A Drama In Five Parts

Jonah 1:1 – 2:10

The story of Jonah. It’s about a man who lived a long time ago. The reason it’s in the bible, though, is because it’s also a story about us. Jonah travels a great journey. And even though his journey covers thousands of kilometres, more importantly it covers a great distance in his soul. Let’s look at this story, but let’s look at it not so much as a journal of places traveled in the world, but of places traveled in the soul. Will we find ourselves in it? Let’s see.

I’ve broken down the story of Jonah’s journey into five parts.

When we think about evil in our world and our lives, we often focus on the dramatic. But what role does quiet indifference play in the spread of evil?

Worship
Harris was born in Greece and emigrated to Canada with his family in the late 1960's. Growing up in Montreal Harris was exposed to the conflicts of living in a multi-cultural, religiously pluralistic, secular world, learning new languages and living the big questions of life. Eventually, he found an outlet for wrestling with such questions through the study of theology, philosophy and spirituality, completing B.A., B. Th., M.Div., and  Ph.D degrees. Harris came to Toronto to become the minister of St. Mark’s. He loves to preach, have good discussions, and to interact with people from all stages and circumstances of life. He also loves being part of a community of incredible diversity, where all can find a place. Harris is married to Pam and between them they have 4 awesome children. In his free time Harris loves to read, watch good movies and practice Karate.

Words of inspiration
Worship is at the center of our spiritual life at St. Mark’s. It is focused on the praise of God. Through music, prayers, singing, reading, words and silence, we discover a whole world that is opened up for us with the word “God.” As we praise, our hearts are opened to greater peace, gratitude, forgiveness, acceptance, conviction to love and serve, to care for the world and all life in it. We receive and by receiving are inspired and energized to give and to allow our connection with God to shape every part of our lives.

WHY WE DO IT?

Children’s Time. Children are an integral part of our community of faith, and that means worship also. Children can’t always understand the issues that concern us as adults and the complexity of life’s challenges. At the same time, it is surprising how much they do understand. In the gospels, not only do we witness Jesus having special interaction with children, but he uses children to show adults the posture of faith necessary for appreciating the gospel: openness and trust. The children’s time is an opportunity to share the gospel with children for children. It also allows the message for adults not to be missed because of complexity. The children can get to the heart of it fairly quickly. May the rest of us never lose the child in us, even as we wrestle with issues in life that have no straightforward or simple answers.
